Volunteer Internship Positions


All Internships are unpaid unless otherwise stated. Interns will be supervised by YWCA staff. We can work with university and school programs to meet credit and degree requirements. All Interns are expected to dress and act in a manner appropriate to a business environment.

Career Services - Career Counselors


Career Counselor Interns
No. of Positions: 1 or 2

About the Program: Career Services provides career counseling and other services to the general public. Clients meet with Career Counselors for career assessment and coaching in a series of sessions.

Position requirements: Graduate students working toward counseling and/or social work certification. We can work with interns to meet their program needs and requirements.

Position Responsibilities: Work with career counselors to develop observation schedule; observe professional career counselors. Act as a Career Counselor to clients at the YWCA under supervision of Intern Supervisor. Career Counselors meet with clients as scheduled at the YWCA. Schedules are flexible. Career Counselors are expected to follow pre-set career counseling procedures. Other tasks include administering the Myers Briggs profile and discussing results with clients, assisting clients with the development of job skills, and maintaining records of client contact are required.

EDGE - Bolder Girls Instructor
No. of Positions: 1

About the Program: After-school program for girls in grades 4-6. Class meets once a week for 12 weeks. Bolder Girls gives girls a chance to experience what it is like to be an investigative reporter. At the end of the program, the Bolder Girls Newspaper is published in the Daily Camera so girls can truly experience what it is like to become a published journalist.

Position details: School-year position with possibility of renewing contract for future years. Instructor teaches one class in fall and one in spring. Instructor works 4-5 hours per week. All EDGE Instructors are required to go through background and fingerprint checks.

Instructor Responsibilities: Before the program begins, instructor will assist the EDGE Program Manager with recruitment and planning activities. This might include visiting schools, hanging flyers, and sending out mailings to attract participants. Once the program begins, the Instructor will plan and teach one 2-hour class per week following a pre-set curriculum guide. Instructor will also be responsible for administrative duties such as taking attendance, purchasing snacks and supplies, monitoring student performance, record keeping, and communicating with parents. At the end of the program, the instructor plans and executes a small publishing party for participants and their families. The instructor will also work with the EDGE Program Manager to monitor mentors placed in the class. The instructor will also meet regularly with the Program Manager and may be asked to occasionally attend staff meetings at the YWCA to report on the program. At the end of the program, the instructor will be asked to file a report on the program with the assistance of the EDGE Program Manager.

EDGE - Voices Carry Instructor
No. of Positions: 1

About the Program: Voices Carry is a leadership and activism program designed to cultivate women who are active members of their communities. This program for teen girls, age 14-17, meets once a week for two hours from October through March. During the first semester participants learn and practice leadership skills. During the second semester, the girls work in pairs to do community service projects that they both design and implement.

Position details: School-year position with possibility of renewing contract for future years. Instructor teaches one class in fall and one in spring. Instructor works 4-5 hours per week. All EDGE Instructors are required to go through background and fingerprint checks.

Instructor Responsibilities: Before the program begins, instructor will assist the EDGE Program Manager with recruitment and planning activities. This might include visiting schools, hanging flyers, and sending out mailings to attract participants. Once the program begins, the Instructor will plan and teach one 2-hour class per week following a pre-set curriculum guide. In October, the Instructor will also be responsible for planning and executing an over-night leadership retreat for program participants. During the spring, the instructor will monitor, attend, and evaluate Community Project presentations, which generally take place outside of class time. The Instructor will also be responsible for administrative duties such as taking attendance, purchasing snacks and supplies, monitoring student performance, record keeping, assessment, and communicating with parents. The instructor will also work with the EDGE Program Manager to monitor mentors placed in the class. The instructor will meet regularly with the EDGE Program Manager and may be asked to occasionally attend staff meetings at the YWCA to report on the program. At the end of the program, the instructor will be asked to file a report on the program with the assistance of the EDGE Program Manager.

EDGE - Wired Girls Instructor

About the Program: After-school program for middle-school students. Wired Girls and Wired Boys are two programs that teach basic technology skills to students in grades 6-8. This program is designed to create confident computer users who can transfer their skills to help them succeed in school and in their future careers.

Position details: School-year position with possibility of renewing contract for future years. Instructor teaches one class in fall and one in spring. Instructor works 4-5 hours per week. All EDGE Instructors are required to go through background and fingerprint checks. Basic knowledge of computer software and hardware necessary, but we will have a computer consultant to assist with the hardware and networking details.

Instructor Responsibilities: Before the program begins, instructor will assist the EDGE Program Manager with recruitment and planning activities. This might include visiting schools, hanging flyers, and sending out mailings to attract participants. The Instructor will also work with the YWCA Computer Consultant to prepare the computer lab and make sure machines are set up as needed for the program. Once the program begins, the Instructor will plan and teach two classes per week (one for boys and one for girls) using the software and curriculum purchased for the class. Instructor will work with the EDGE Program Manager to oversee mentors who have been placed in the class. The Instructor will also be responsible for administrative duties such as taking attendance, purchasing snacks and supplies, monitoring student performance, record keeping, computer lab maintenance, and communicating with parents. The instructor will meet regularly with the EDGE Program Manager and may be asked to occasionally attend staff meetings at the YWCA to report on the program. At the end of the program, the instructor will be asked to file a report on the program's success.

EDGE - Teen Parent Graduation Project Facilitator

About the Program: The YWCA works with students enrolled in Fairview High School's Teen Parent Program. The goal of this mentoring program is to 1) improve graduation rates among teen parents, 2) encourage teen parents to pursue higher education, and 3) career development training that will help the teen parents achieve a high level of economic self-sufficiency in the future. The mentoring program focuses on an intensive 6-week mentor lunch forum in October and November followed by monthly activities throughout the rest of the school year.

Position details: School-year position with possibility of renewing contract for future years. Facilitator plans and executes various mentor activities and oversees mentors. Facilitator will work 4-5 hours per week October-December and a few hours per month in the Spring.

Facilitator Responsibilities: Work with the EDGE Program manager to recruit mentors for the program. Meet with the Director and teachers from TPP to plan program activities. Plan and attend 1) Mentor lunches, 2) Career Day, 3) Job Shadowing, 4) Guest Speakers, and 5) Mentor Activities as described in the TPGP handbook. Work with TPP teachers and mentors to teach career development lessons during mentor lunches following pre-set curriculum guide. The Facilitator will also be responsible for administrative duties such as taking attendance, purchasing snacks and supplies, assessment and record keeping, activity scheduling, and administering a scholarship application process. The facilitator will meet regularly with the EDGE Program Manager and may be asked to occasionally attend staff meetings at the YWCA to report on the program. At the end of the program, the instructor will be asked to file a report on the program's success.

EDGE - Wired Girls/Boys Program Instructor

About the Program: After-school program for middle-school students. Wired Girls and Wired Boys are two programs that teach basic technology skills to students in grades 4-6. This program is designed to create confident computer users who can transfer their skills to help them succeed in school and in their future careers. This class is offered exclusively for participants in the I Have a Dream program. Please note: this course meets in Louisville at Angevine middle school.

Position details: School-year position with possibility of renewing contract for future years. Instructor teaches one class in fall and one in spring. Instructor works 4-5 hours per week. All EDGE Instructors are required to go through background and fingerprint checks. No benefits. Basic knowledge of computer software and hardware necessary, but we will have a computer consultant to assist with the major hardware and networking details.

Instructor Responsibilities: The Instructor will also work with the YWCA Computer Consultant to prepare the computer lab and make sure machines are set up as needed for the program. The Instructor will also meet with the EDGE Program Manager and the IHAD directors to plan the program. Once the program begins, the Instructor will plan and teach two classes per week (one for boys and one for girls) using the software and curriculum decided by YWCA and IHAD. Instructor will work with the EDGE Program Manager to oversee mentors who have been placed in the class. The Instructor will also be responsible for administrative duties such as taking attendance, purchasing snacks and supplies, monitoring student performance, record keeping, computer lab maintenance, and communicating with parents. The instructor might also be asked to plan a publishing party for participants and their families at the end of the program. The instructor will meet regularly with the EDGE Program Manager and may be asked to occasionally attend staff meetings at the YWCA to report on the program. At the end of the program, the instructor will be asked to file a report on the program's success.

Lifeskills - Eating Disorder Support Group Intern

Intern requirements: Must be responsible and self-motivated, able to work under minimal supervision. At least junior or senior standing, graduate student preferred.

Intern Responsibilities: Develop resources to give people with Eating Disorders. Develop plan for an Eating Disorder Support group to be offered at the YWCA.

Wise Women Coordinator

Intern requirements: Must be responsible and self-motivated, able to work under minimal supervision. Senior status a plus.

Intern Responsibilities: Work with Senior women in the Wise Women Program. Program is currently inactive, so Intern would be responsible for recreating program, recruiting support, and other tasks as necessary.

Technical Support Network Administrator

Intern requirements: Students working toward a degree in computer science or related field. Must understand computer hardware and have knowledge of computer networking.

Intern Responsibilities: Set up and maintain networks in the computer lab. Assist with computer upgrades and maintenance for staff computers. Troubleshoot computer problems etc...

Accounting Intern

Intern requirements: Students working toward a degree in accounting or related field. Junior or senior standing preferred, graduate students a plus. Working knowledge of computers is necessary.

Intern Responsibilities: Assist the Business Manager with posting bills, maintaining budgets, and other accounting tasks as necessary.

Reading to End Racism School Coordinator

About the Program: Reading to End Racism is not part of the YWCA of Boulder County, but shares office space in our building. This program goes into schools to read books to students that teach against racism. RER has the final say in recruiting interns to work with them.

Intern requirements: Volunteer will have to go through the RER training program, and will need transportation to various school sites.

Intern Responsibilities: Intern will be responsible for coordinating readings with students at a specific school. The intern will also read books to students, assist at outreach events, and do other duties as they arise.
