The Boulder JCC is partnering with YWCA Boulder County and YOUnify to host “The Power of Peacemaking” on Monday, October 30. The program includes a screening of the thought-provoking documentary The Abortion Talks, followed by a talkback with the Filmmakers.
The Abortion Talks is an inspiring film based on the true story of the aftermath of the shooting of two abortion clinic workers in the Boston area in the 1990s and the path to peace paved by years of secret meetings between women on opposite sides of the issue.
“This film is very inspiring,” said Joy Alice Eisenhauer, Art, Culture and Education, Director at the Boulder JCC. “The leaders in Boston are fierce advocates for their cause but they were able to bridge the divide and come together.”
The program will include a short workshop after the film screening that will include an interactive discussion with Filmmaker, Sarah Perkins, and local community leaders to discuss techniques that can transform stereotypes into genuine mutual understanding
“This film flips the script by using abortion not as a cultural flashpoint, but as a vehicle to create dialogue in bridging divides,” says Eisenhauer.
“All the partnering organizations welcome people of all backgrounds and beliefs to join us to watch this film and draw inspiration from the women in it,” said Debbie Pope, CEO, YWCA Boulder County. “In these polarized times, we have partnered with the Boulder JCC, YOUnify, and the community not only to draw inspiration but to provide tools for paving a courageous path in strengthening our community, just as the women of The Abortion Talks did three decades ago,” she added.
Doors open at 5:30 pm and the film will begin promptly at 6:15 pm. The event is free and particpants are encouraged to register in advance as seats are limited. All Boulder JCC programs are open to everyone, regardless of religious affiliation. You do not need to be Jewish to participate. There is no membership requirement to participate in Boulder JCC programs.
