Wellness and Nutrition Program

Baby Girl, Childcare, YWCA Boulder County

At Persimmon Early Learning, we provide children with well-rounded, quality child care. Since 2017, our Wellness Program has incorporated increased physical activity and nutrition education into each day.

The program consists of:

  • active play lessons

  • visiting music and dance educators

  • field trips to local parks and community farms

  • nutrition lessons

  • seasonal gardening on all playgrounds

We work alongside local farms, Boulder County Public Health, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to achieve this goal. We bring instructors to teach yoga and other classes such as music and dance into our classrooms. Our staff Wellness Coordinator teaches all the nutrition classes as well as most of the physical activity classes.

Our indoor and outdoor learning areas for each age group provide plenty of space for active play. In good weather, children spend as much time outdoors exploring nature as possible, and we also utilize our large upstairs classroom for indoor activities. Our newly remodeled outdoor spaces were each designed to be age-appropriate and offer all the learning benefits of an indoor classroom.

What we provide

  • Meals

Our on-site nutrition educator cooks all the meals and snacks in our newly remodeled kitchen, working hard to provide scratch-to-table, simple whole foods and to limit refined sugar and processed foods on our menu. We incorporate our menus into the nutrition lessons throughout the week. Some of the children’s favorite recipes include Blueberry Beet Muffins, Hawaiian Wrap (broccoli, carrot, chicken), Red Cabbage Quinoa Wraps, Roasted Corn and Avocado Wraps.

    Nutrition Lessons

Persimmon Early Learning teaches the importance of fruits and vegetables by implementing fun, hands-on nutrition activities like gardening, cooking classes, taste-testings, field trips, farmer visits, and meals and snacks. Nutrition lessons are held twice per week in each classroom and are tailored to educate different age groups. These lessons are exploration and activity based, encouraging children to explore new foods and participate in cooking projects. Other activities incorporate the different food groups and learning where food comes from or how it grows. We also participate in Farm to ECE, so children have the opportunity to try locally grown foods. Our partners: Farm to ECE and CHOP

  • Harper Gardening

    Our Garden

The children are actively involved in gardening here at Persimmon Early Learning, as well as within our community when we visit local farms. Our newly remodeled outdoor spaces  incorporate three garden beds and each year we plant a variety of beautiful flowers, tons of vegetables, and a few fruits. The children learn about the plant cycle starting in the spring when they plant seeds and seedlings provided by Boulder County Public Health’s Farm to ECE program and continue to help grow healthy and delicious fruits and vegetables until they are ready for harvest in the fall. They enjoy fresh produce from our gardens, as well as produce donated from local farms through the Farm to ECE program. When children are involved in the gardening process they are more likely to try and enjoy new healthy foods. In addition to healthy and tasty fruit and vegetables, we grow plants that are colorful and fun (and safe) to touch, to provide opportunities for sensory exploration for our infants and toddlers.

  • Fitness

Every day we provide our toddlers and preschoolers with at least 30 minutes of structured physical activity. Fitness activities develop and improve motor skills, coordination, language and listening skills, physical ability, social skills, spatial awareness, and overall health and wellness. We also incorporate yoga and mindfulness into our daily program in order to support children developing self-regulation and social -emotional skills.

  • Casper on Tebo Train

    Field Trips

Our field trips expose children to new learning environments. These trips can include harvesting, planting, learning about the garden or farm, observing farm animals or bugs, and nutrition lessons. We love using these trips to show the kids where our food comes from! Past field trip destinations include Growing Gardens, Ollin Farms, Milk and Honey Farm, CU Museum of Natural History and local parks and Boulder Library visits.

  • Other Classes

In addition to the physical activity classes and nutrition education we partner with many other teachers and organizations to create a fun and unique learning environment. These additional classes include Music Class with Mr. Scott, visits from Growing Gardens for more advanced specialty nutrition classes and dance classes with T2 Dance Company.

  • I have been impressed with the quality of care and attention to the individual child. The nutrition, movement, and yoga classes have been fundamental to the development of my daughter. She picks up on the lessons and the learning is evident in other contexts.

    Persimmon Early Learning Family

  • I am so thankful for the program and love how it integrates nutrition, movement, and yoga into my daughter’s preschool days. She has learned so much and demonstrates her learning by playing games at home, helping prepare healthy foods, and using breathing exercises and yoga to relax. The teachers and curriculum have set a strong foundation, positively shaping who my daughter is and who she will become in the future. She is off to a great start! Thank you!

  • April Norman

April is a certified Early Childhood Education Teacher, as well as a certified yoga instructor for both children and adults. Her classes focus on warming up the cardiovascular system by running, dancing, and vigorous movements like jumping, skipping etc., leading the children through movement stories that focus on each classroom’s current Storybook Journey curriculum, and then cooling down through yoga stretches. The class ends with mindfulness breathing techniques. April’s philosophy for early children education is grounded in the fact that teaching children to be active and self-regulated gives them a jump start to lifelong health.
