FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YWCA Boulder County Announces Reproductive Rights Rally and Signature-Gathering Even

Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom Event Will Take Place in Downtown Boulder on January 27, 2024

BOULDER, CO – January 19, 2024 – YWCA Boulder County announced today that it will be holding a rally and signature-gathering event from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on January 27, 2024, in front of the Boulder County Courthouse in downtown Boulder (1300 Pearl Street, Boulder, CO). The event is being planned in partnership with member organizations of the Women's Collaborative of Boulder County as part of the Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom Individual Endorsement movement and in support of the upcoming Colorado Reproductive Health, Rights & Justice (CO RHRJ) Coalition.

CO RHRJ will be running a ballot initiative to protect abortion access from government interference in 2024. The proposed initiative, Initiative 89, states the following: “A change to the Colorado constitution recognizing the right to abortion, and, in connection therewith, prohibiting the state and local governments from denying, impeding, or discriminating against the exercise of that right, allowing abortion to be a covered service under health insurance plans for Colorado state and local government employees and enrollees in state and local governmental insurance programs.” Abortion access would be protected in Colorado’s constitution under the ballot measure.

YWCA Boulder County was an early endorser of the initiative. “The proposed initiative aimed at guaranteeing abortion access in Colorado is something we’ve been working on for a long time,” said Debbie Pope, CEO, YWCA Boulder County. “We believe in reproductive and fundamental rights for all, and protecting access to abortion is a critical component of that,” she added.

Signatures for the petition will be gathered at the event to reach the 185,000 signatures needed to legalize reproductive rights and access in Colorado. Additionally, speakers from across the movement will share their stories, and popular Denver-based DJ, DJ CYN, will provide the sound system and music for the rally portion of the event. Additionally, a sister event will be taking place in Longmont from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on January 27, 2024, at 6th Avenue and Main Street.

YWCA Boulder County and Women’s Collaborative of Boulder County have hosted previous rallies and marches in Boulder, engaging thousands of community members from Boulder County and surrounding states.
