Caring for the People and Causes You Love – Denny’s Story

Meet Denny Kercher, a member of YWCA Boulder County’s Empowerment League. Denny is part of this very special group of supporters who have included YWCA Boulder County in their estate plans and committed themselves to the future of the organization with a bequest, such as being a partial beneficiary of a retirement account or appreciated assets. These planned gifts will provide the organization with steady future income to ensure the work continues to empower women and eliminate racism.

A YWCA Boulder County volunteer for the past 25 years, Denny has served on the Board of Directors in various capacities including Board President and Board Advisor. She played an active role as the organization grew and strengthened its impact and reach in the community. Denny never imagined she would have the funds to leave a bequest and support YWCA Boulder County, an organization that helped give her life meaning by providing an outlet that matched so well with her values.

YWCA Boulder County helped Denny live her life with meaning by following her passion and dreams: protecting children and empowering women. These were values rooted in her own personal experience as her early years were not easy. She grew up ahead of her years caring for two parents with disabilities and sadly, she also suffered abuse at the hands of men. However, these trying and painful experiences only strengthened her resolve to do everything she could to protect and strengthen other women and girls.

Denny went on to build a family, a career, and a community, all while finding her voice. She dreamed big and forged a business that helped to empower other women while empowering herself, and YWCA Boulder County helped her achieve her dream. There were times while raising her daughters as a single mother when money was very tight. She wasn’t sure she could ever leave an estate gift to YWCA Boulder County. And then she thought of her house - a safe haven for her and her girls, and a means to an end. Her home was now valued well beyond what she could ever have hoped, and she is now a member of the Empowerment League. Finally, she was able to include YWCA Boulder County in her will.

Denny has always valued giving back. It started when she was a child attending church and was taught to tithe to support those in need. For her, joining YWCA Boulder County’s Empowerment League was the achievement of a dream to give back to the organization, and the culmination of many years of support. For other donors whose values align with YWCA Boulder County’s mission and goals, joining the Empowerment League is a way to ensure that their annual support is continued in perpetuity.
